On the Edge of Life was a collaborative project between the RCA, The
Guildhall School of Music and the neo-natal intensive care ward in St.
Thomas' hospital, tooting. It culminated in a live exhibition/ event in
the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institute, for the Bath international
music festival 2007, and was the starting point for many of the collaborations
which have since come about.

The project was set up as an awareness-raising opportunity, to bring to public attention some of the ethical and social issues around babies who are born very premature. I worked with musician Michael Goodey. The focus of our research and making was the point at which a child can be said to be conscious, and the process by which this awakening occurs.

The film below was installed in the space on 12 miniature televisions, wedged into a Victorian bookcase with packaging and newspaper strewn around.
